By: Deion Trotter
The Chandler Wolves overcame a slow start and took control late, defeating the Brophy Broncos 28–13 in a Thursday night matchup.
Chandler entered the game without starting quarterback Will Mencl for the entire first quarter due to a coach’s decision. Brophy took advantage of the opportunity late in the opening quarter when quarterback Noah Stewart broke loose for a 64-yard run, setting up Ryder Noche, who scored on a 13-yard rushing touchdown. Brophy led 6–0 after one quarter.
Mencl entered in the second quarter and immediately helped Chandler’s offense find its rhythm. On his second drive, Mencl connected with multiple receivers before finding Iona Kupa for a 4-yard touchdown. Chandler took a 7–6 lead into halftime.
Brophy responded coming out of halftime. Noche scored his second rushing touchdown of the night on a 66-yard run, putting the Broncos back ahead 13–7.
Chandler answered with Mencl once again making an impact. After moving the Wolves into Brophy territory, Mencl took off for an 11-yard rushing touchdown, giving Chandler the lead back.
The fourth quarter belonged to Chandler.
After a failed fourth-down attempt, Chandler’s defense forced a three-and-out. A short punt gave the Wolves possession at the Brophy 20-yard line, and Ty Strozier finished the drive with a 15-yard rushing touchdown.
Chandler added another score when David Douglas found the end zone on a 5-yard rushing touchdown, extending the lead to 28–13.
The Wolves’ defense continued to make plays late, including a blocked and recovered punt by Austin Reese that helped put the finishing touches on the victory.
