Corona Del Sol picked up another win Thursday night, shutting out Desert Ridge 50-0 to improve to 6-1 on the season. The Aztecs continued their strong play on both sides of the ball, putting together another solid performance as they head into the final three games of the regular season.

The win also gives Corona its fourth shutout of the season. The Aztecs have done a great job keeping opponents off the scoreboard, and Thursday night was another example of how well the defense has played throughout the year.

Farrell Leads the Offense

QB Luke Farrell (C/O ‘27) contributed three touchdowns, scoring twice on the ground and threw for one in the air.

ATH Chayson Maclin (C/O ‘28) added a receiving touchdown, while RB Tristan Richey (C/O ‘27) scored twice on the ground. RB Cortez Young (C/O ‘28) also found the end zone with a rushing touchdown.

Evan Dunn (C/O ‘28) added a successful two-point conversion to contribute to the Aztecs’ scoring total.

Defense Records Another Shutout

Corona’s defense was just as important to Thursday’s win. The Aztecs held Desert Ridge scoreless for the entire game, recording their fourth shutout of the season.

DB Domani Newsome (C/O ‘27) added to the performance with an interception returned for a touchdown. The pick-six gave the defense a chance to get on the scoreboard as well.

After finishing 3-7 last season, Corona has already won six games this year. The improvement has been clear, and the Aztecs will look to keep that going as they enter the final stretch of the season.

Farrell believes this year’s team has a different mindset than in previous seasons, and he pointed to the defense as a major reason for the team’s success.

“We’re a different team than we’ve been in the past couple of years. Our defense has played exceptionally well, allowing us to record four shutouts this season,” Farrell said.

What’s Next?

Corona will return home on Friday, October 23, to take on Queen Creek for Senior Night.

With three region games remaining, the Aztecs have an opportunity to finish the regular season strong. Farrell believes the team’s confidence will be important as they prepare for the matchup.

“I believe we can carry that momentum into our game against Queen Creek because we have confidence in ourselves and know what it feels like to win. That confidence goes a long way,” Farrell said.

At 6-1, Corona will look to keep its momentum going against Queen Creek and give its seniors a strong performance on their home field.
