The celebration eventually ends. The championship shirts get folded away. The trophy finds its place inside the school. Then reality sets in, everyone wants to beat the champion. That is exactly where Basha High School finds itself entering the 2026 football season.

After capturing the Arizona Open Division state championship last fall, the Bears are no longer chasing anyone. They are the team everyone else is chasing. Every opponent has circled Basha on the schedule. Every Friday night will feel like a playoff game. Every roster in Arizona believes it can be the team that knocks off the defending champions.

That pressure comes with success. Inside the walls of Basha, however, expectations have never been higher. This is no longer a program hoping to compete with Arizona’s elite. It is the standard others are trying to reach.

For years, Basha fought to earn respect among Arizona’s traditional football powers. Programs like Chandler, Hamilton, Centennial, and Liberty had long established themselves as championship contenders. Basha was often viewed as the talented team still searching for its defining moment. That perception has completely changed.

Since winning its first Open Division championship in 2022, Basha has consistently remained among Arizona’s premier football programs. Last season, the Bears climbed back to the top of the mountain, capturing another Open Division title and proving their success was anything but temporary. Few people understand what it takes to sustain excellence better than Athletic Director Eric Magana. Before stepping into athletic administration, Magana spent years coaching championship-caliber football in Arizona. His experience has helped create an environment where success is expected across every athletic program.

On his official social media page, Magana recently summed up the mindset that continues driving Basha athletics. “Everything we want is on the other side of hard.” Exactly how championship programs think. That mentality has become part of Basha’s identity. No shortcuts, No entitlement, and No satisfaction with what they were able to achieve last season.

Every Champion Faces The Same Question

Every championship team eventually hears the same question. Can they do it again? History shows repeating is often more difficult than winning the first championship. Programs like Hamilton, Chandler, Liberty, Centennial, Perry, Higley, and other Open Division contenders all understand that beating Basha carries significance beyond one victory. It sends a message to the rest of Arizona. For the Bears, every Friday becomes another opportunity to prove last season was not a one-time accomplishment.

The Community Expects Excellence

Football means something different in Chandler. Packed student sections, overflowing parking lots, youth players watching from the fence, and families arriving hours before kickoff. Few places in Arizona support high school football differently than the East Valley. Basha has become one of the communities leading that tradition.

The success of the football program has created excitement throughout campus and inspired the next generation of Bears. Young athletes no longer grow up hoping Basha can compete for championships. They grow up expecting it. That cultural shift may be the program’s greatest accomplishment.

The Road To Another Title

Repeating as Open Division champion will require more than talent, Health, Leadership, and Player development will all play a big role. The Bears cannot rely on last season’s accomplishments. Every championship run creates new challenges, Every playoff game requires adjustments, and Every opponent becomes more confident. That is the reality of defending a title. Still, few programs appear better equipped for that challenge than Basha. The infrastructure, The culture, and The expectation already exists. Now comes the work.

What It Means

Basha enters the 2026 season exactly where every program hopes to be. At the top. Remaining there will be far more difficult than getting there. The Bears are no longer trying to prove they belong among Arizona’s elite, They already have. Now they have an opportunity to accomplish something even greater. Another championship would not simply validate last season. It would establish Basha as the defining football program of this era in Arizona high school football. For everyone else, the mission is simple, beat the champions. For Basha, the goal has remained unchanged since winter workouts began, to win it all again.
